Karate may be defined as a weaponless means of self defense. It consists of offensive and defensive techniques using the entire body to its maximum capability.

The Value of Karate

In our every day lives we often forget the value of exercise with its numerous benefits. Among the most common in Karate are:

  • Improved health and appearance

  • Uniform muscle development and body conditioning

  • Increased stamina, agility, speed and strength

  • Improved coordination, reflexes and balance

  • Self-control, self confidence, and self-discipline

  • Self-esteem

  • Increased concentration

However, the serious practice of Karate develops composure, a clearer thought process, deeper insight into one's mental capabilities, as well as more self-confidence. In this, Karate is not an end, but a means to an end. It is an activity in which advancing age is not a hindrance. Rather it encourages proficiency in the keen coordination of mind and body.

Karate Practice

This section is divided into four separate sections:

  1. KIHON - Basic blocks, punches and stances
  2. KATA - Prearranged forms simulating combat situations
  3. KUMITE - Sparring
  4. MEDITATION - Clearing the mind

In each category the beginner is given instruction at the most basic level until the techniques become spontaneous to him or her.

Self-Defense

The trained Karateist is able to coordinate the mind and body perfectly, allowing him or her to unleash tremendous physical possession of great physical strength that makes a strong Karateist; rather it is the ability to coordinate the mind and body. Even the smallest person finds that he or she have within themselves this power upon developing this ability.

Promotion / Testing

Promotion is a Sensei's acknowledgement of his student's effort and achievement. A Sensei awards rank for progress in the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of Karate. Although there are technique requirements for each level, physical ability alone is not sufficient for promotion. The student must also show progress in the mental and spiritual areas. A Student may be asked to perform all or any part of the posted requirements - points are deducted for each mistake. Each test has a fee which is charged if the student passes. The time required to achieve the first promotion (yellow belt) varies with each student. The average time is three months. It is considered IMPROPER to ask when your next test will be held. You will be advised by your Sensei.
